Foundations Presents Behavioral Health Education Workshops Doylestown, PA (October 10, 2006) – Foundations Behavioral Health, a non-profit behavioral health facility for children, adolescents and their families based in Doylestown, PA has announced its upcoming education workshops for mental health professionals and educators on “Adolescent Dual Diagnosis”, “Treatments for Anger” and “Cutting/Self-Destructive Behaviors in Adolescents.” John Ouligian, MD, in private practice in Ardmore, Pa. and Westmont, NJ and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine will discuss “Adolescent Dual Diagnosis: Recognition and Treatment” on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006. Dr. Ouligian will define dual diagnosis and discuss the most common types of mental illnesses that occur with or because of substance abuse. He'll describe how to recognize the presence of a dual diagnosis and identify mental illness caused by substance abuse rather than fueling the abuse. The most effective treatment options, including when to use medications and which medications to use, will be discussed. Brendan Greer, M.D., Staff Psychiatrist, Council for Relationships will present a workshop on “Treatments for Anger” on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006. Dr. Greer will provide a robust framework for understanding and addressing the symptom of pathologic anger in adolescents. During his presentation he’ll review the normal and pathologic dimensions of anger as a maladaptive feeling/behavioral state and as a symptom. He’ll also provide specific information on some of the main therapeutic and medication treatment approaches to the symptom of pathologic anger. The workshop will review the differential diagnosis of the many conditions for which anger can be a symptom and offer problem-solving for participants’ cases. Treatment approaches via therapeutic and systemic interventions and via medications will be reviewed. On Weds., March 7, 2007 Stephanie Newberg, M.Ed., L.C.S.W., Assistant Director, Center City & Wynnewood Offices & Senior Staff Therapist, Council for Relationships will discuss “Cutting/Self-Destructive Behaviors in Adolescents.” Many factors and variables lead adolescents to resort to self-injurious behavior. During a follow-up to her sold-out presentation last year, Stephanie Newberg will discuss why self-injurious behavior makes some adolescents feel better, how mental health professionals can effectively work with this population/behavior, and what strategies teens can use to cope with and become more self-aware of their emotions. She’ll also offer case examples to illustrate the concepts and provide additional treatment strategies and theories. “We’re pleased to present these workshops on timely and important issues in the adolescent behavioral health field,” says Ronald Bernstein, President and CEO of Foundations Behavioral Health. “We encourage educators and mental health professionals to register and obtain continuing education credits.” All workshops are held from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Foundations Behavioral Health Community Service Center, Community Room, 833 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown, Pa. Refreshments will be served. There is a $35 fee to attend each program.
