Who Can Benefit From the LifeWorks Alternative
School
The LifeWorks Alternative School, an approved provider of
Alternative Education by the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
accepts students enrolled in middle or high school, grades
6th through 12th, who need a small structured compassionate
environment in which to learn. The length of time spent in
the LifeWorks Alternative School varies; students may enroll
for a full academic year or a shorter transitional period.
The
school offers a strong academic curriculum, supportive
teachers, and a wide spectrum of counseling services. Struggling
students can get the individualized instruction they need,
while receiving counseling services that allow them the
opportunities
to learn the skills necessary for success. Counseling services
consist of group therapy and individual support through
social skills training, expressive therapy, conflict resolution,
and anger management. Through the combined efforts of academic
instruction and counseling services, students can improve
academic success, develop positive coping and leadership
skills, gain positive socialization and interpersonal skills,
and reduce behavioral health symptoms. The ultimate goal
for each student is to develop the motivation and success
at school that will enable them to return to a regular
school
curriculum and/or fulfill the requirements for graduation.
The Educational Team
Our team of qualified, expert staff is trained to deal with
children and adolescents suffering from significant emotional
and behavioral health problems. Academic instruction is
provided in classrooms by certified teachers. The students
have daily interaction with certified teachers, instructional
assistants, master's level therapists, certified school
counselors, and ancillary professionals. The students receive
instruction in core subjects, including math, science,
language arts, and social studies. Rounding out the academic
program are classes in physical education, computers, art,
career and vocational exploration, and health.

Why Alternative Schools
Work
LifeWorks Alternative School can provide many advantages
to students exhibiting behavioral health problems that regular
schools are not able to offer. Students who are unable to
be successful in a traditional school setting can benefit
from the small, creative, highly individualized learning
approaches of an alternative school. The alternative classroom
setting offers a way to address disruptive behaviors caused
by an emotional or behavioral health problem. Students who
exhibit depression, anxiety disorders, thought disturbances,
school avoidance, family/peer/school conflict, and poor social
skills can get the help they need in a non-threatening, supportive
environment. Designed to draw out each student's unique talents,
the LifeWorks Alternative School provides them with the skills
necessary to learn and be successful.
